Mirror’s Edge Catalyst Origin giveaway!

Hello everyone, sorry for the lack of updates lately, for those who don’t know, I’m in Japan so I don’t always have time to write news on this site. I can’t even play Catalyst! I hope you guys and girls are enjoying the game though, but if like me, you still haven’t bought Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, here’s a chance for you to get it for free!

I have partnered with Kinguin to get you a free copy of the game on Origin! All you have to do is sign-up to Mirror’s Edge Fans if it’s not already done and write a comment below this article saying you want the game (please don’t do this if you already have the game)! On Monday I will write another article to announce the end of the operation and I will randomly choose a winner from the participants.

If you don’t want to wait, you can buy the game on Kinguin at a great price :)

Good luck!

Launch trailer!

Hi there! I’m still in Japan for an unknown period of time and these days I really don’t have time to even use my laptop, it’s the first morning in days I’m spending time on the internet, but I’ll be short because I still have a lot ahead of me. Just a reminder, here’s my Instagram if you want to see what I’ve visited (I post a lot of photos)!

So, the release date of Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is getting closer (June 7th US / June 9th Eur) and it was time for EA/Dice to release the game’s launch trailer, which is pretty awesome:

And if you are an Origin Access or EA Access member, you’ll be able to play the game starting June 2nd but only for 6 hours.
Bye bye!

More than 35 minutes of gameplay videos

Just when we’ve seen some more of Mirror’s Edge Catalyst with the latest dev diary, some gameplay videos are popping on YouTube, here are two of them.
The first one shows the first 20 minutes of the game and the second one is mostly exploration. Obviously, if you want to discover the game when it’s released, don’t watch these!

Beta date and Social Play dev diary

A few days ago, Design Director Erik Odeldahl was talking at EGX Rezzed and when asked about the beta and social play components of Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, he couldn’t say a word.
Well, now we know everything thanks to this new article!
First, the beta will happen from April 22nd to April 26th.

Closed Beta participants will be able to try out several of the main missions in Faith’s story, Side Missions, other optional content, and the Social Play features Mirror’s Edge Catalyst has to offer.

At the same time, there is a new developper’s diary video entirely dedicated to social play, the multiplayer component we’ve been wondering about for a long time.
I won’t describre everything that’s said in the video because you will watch it (see below) but it all seems pretty cool and we have a glimpse of what the MAG Rope gameplay looks like (just a couple of seconds but still).

Five of the Conglomerate’s corporations

As we already know, the enemy of the people in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is a group of big corporations owning the city of Glass called the Conglomerate.
Today we learn some details about five of these thirteen big companies. We already know some of them from the first game like Kruger Holding and Callaghan Construction Corp but there are also Silvine Systems, Maya Media Group and Anansi Group.
Click here to read the full article on MirrorsEdge.com and learn a bit more about each of these corporations.

Erik Odeldahl’s presentation at EGX Rezzed

DICE’s Design Director Erik Odeldahl talked for about 50 minutes at EGX Rezzed a few hours ago and here’s what I’ve gathered from his presentation:
He started his speech by talking about the inspirations in creating Mirror’s Edge Catalyst and the mere fact that this game is here to answer questions from the first game, especially: who is Faith and why does she run?
The dev team started by establishing four “core pillars” they would always rely on when trying to add stuff to the game and they are the following:

  • The rise of a heroine (Faith’s origin story)
  • First person action (removing osbtacles slowing the player down, including guns)
  • Exploring the city of Glass (being free to do anything at anytime / context, history of the city)
  • Social playground (not much about that / racing through the city)

Here’s a quick list of what was told next by Erik Odeldahl:
– heights in the game: we could fall from up to 800m (that’s a long fall!)
– everything is about movement, skill
– nothing’s been randomly placed in the city
– runner’s vision works a bit like a GPS now, continuously updating the path
– MEC is more inspired by science-fiction than the first game
– a few words about the history of Cascadia (the country), but you can learn more about that if you keep exploring the city
– Virtual Reality: Dice is looking into VR but doesn’t make the game in this optics
– we will learn more about the social component “really really soon”. It’s integrated around the city.

Here’s the video if you want to watch it (it starts at 9:20) and a few pictures below:

New images from GDC lighting presentation

Recently at GDC, some developers from DICE talked quite extensively about the lighting in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. Until now it wasn’t very interesting for most fans because very technical, but now that Dualshockers released the presentation’s PDF document, we can discover plenty of new images from the game (along with the technical details, if you understand some of it).

So, click here to view and download this awesome PDF file and feast your eyes on some gorgeous new views of the city. Here are a few:

More on combat in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst

EA/Dice keep informing us about Mirror’s Edge Catalyst; we can really feel that the game’s release is getting closer.

Today they tell us more about the way Faith will fight the Conglomerate’s troops. She has two types of attacks: light and heavy, but even then, everything depends on the context and your momentum. You can just quickly hit and get away or really hurt the guy and make him disoriented.
In terms of damages on Faith, she will get hurt normally (she’s not Superwoman) but when she runs out of stamina, her health reaches a critical level.
We have heard of “Focus” before, and it is explained in this article: you gather Focus when you run flawlessly. When you are in complete Focus, you can’t get hurt (if you get hit, you just lose Focus, not health) and you are almost invisible to enemies.

As we have seen in some gameplay trailers, the game will feature third-person takedowns. It might seem strange for an FPS game but it’s a way to show us Faith (and honestly, who doesn’t want to see her?) and to indicate that you’ve defeated the last enemy in the area.
There’s another thing we know a bit about: “Shift”. They remind us that it’s like a short burst of acceleration that can be useful in many situations.
Faith also has something called the “Disruptor”, it’s part of her gadgets and allows her to hack various systems, open doors and so on. But in combat, it will allow her to stun a group of enemies using a loud sound when she has gathered enough Focus to use this function.

Now that we have all this information, we’re ready to kick some ass! Let’s hope the beta will be available soon!
